Mutual Funds
The debate between Active and Passive (Index) investing has transformed the mutual fund industry. An Active Fund is run by a fund manager and analysts picking individual stocks to beat the benchmark. An Index Fund simply mimics a benchmark like the Nifty 50 or Sensex, buying the same stocks in the same proportions.
In highly developed markets like the US, index funds almost always beat active funds. In developing markets like India, though, skilled fund managers still find undervalued stocks — active funds, particularly in Mid-Cap and Small-Cap categories, have historically generated 'Alpha', returns above the benchmark.
You don't have to choose just one. A robust strategy uses Index Funds for the Large-Cap core, since it's very hard for active managers to beat the Nifty 50 consistently, and Active Funds for Mid-Cap and Small-Cap exposure, where expert stock picking adds real value.
