Personal Loan vs. Credit Card EMI: Which is the Cheaper Option?
When you need funds for a sudden expense — a medical emergency, home renovation, or a big purchase — you generally have two quick options: a standard Personal Loan, or converting a Credit Card swipe into an EMI. Which actually costs you less?
Understanding Personal Loans
- Interest Rates: Typically 10.5% to 24% per annum, depending on your CIBIL score and employer profile.
- Processing Fees: Usually 1-3% of the loan amount, deducted upfront.
- Tenure: Flexible, usually 1 to 5 years — ideal for larger amounts (e.g. ₹5 Lakhs).
- Time to Funding: 24 to 48 hours.
Understanding Credit Card EMIs
- Interest Rates: Often 14-18% per annum for merchant EMI conversions, though some cards offer 'No-Cost EMIs' on specific brands.
- Processing Fees: Generally a flat fee (₹199 to ₹999) rather than a percentage.
- Tenure: Shorter, usually 3-24 months — ideal for smaller consumer goods.
- Time to Funding: Instant.
The Final Verdict
For large amounts (above ₹1 Lakh) and longer repayment periods (2+ years), a Personal Loan is almost always cheaper due to lower baseline interest rates. For smaller purchases (under ₹1 Lakh) paid off in 6-12 months, a Credit Card EMI is more convenient and avoids heavy percentage-based processing fees.
